WHAT IS CHILD SUPPORT?

Child support is the amount of money the non-custodial parent is obligated to pay to the custodial parent for the support of the children. This amount is based upon a percentage of the income of both parents, and the number of children of the marriage.

Child support must be paid until each child reaches the age of emancipation, which is generally 21. In addition to the basic child support obligation, the non-custodial parent may be obligated to pay a portion of child care expenses, health care expenses, and educational expenses.
